writing update
Finally started writing my next short story! I’m only about 500 words in, but it’s going pretty well so far. I’m not really sure where to go with it—the premise is interesting, I think, but a little unrealistic. I’m not really working on it right now since I’m on vacation, but it’s in the back of my mind. Other than that, my plans are to keep editing the short stories I’ve already written and start my novel.
current read
Still working on The Handmaid’s Tale. It’s a little slow to be honest, but Margaret Atwood’s writing is stunning and the premise is captivating. I’m sure I’ll lean into it more with time.
While in the Hamptons, my boyfriend and I are going to start reading the one and only A Court of Thorns and Roses! Not sure what to expect fully, but I’m hyped.
one note of the week
Each day, I try to take note of stand-out things around me. Here is this week’s best:
I dropped my puppy off at doggy daycare for the first time in months. He’s a boisterous thing, bold and funny and loving. When he got there, though, his tail immediately fell between legs—literally, not just metaphorically. He separated himself from the rest of the dogs, large hounds that towered over him. According to my mom, it was like dropping off your kid at school and watching them on the playground all alone. (Don’t worry, he was fine by the end of it lol)
writing prompt
Explain your stories’ world from the perspective of one of your characters. How would they describe the setting? Use all five senses (taste, touch, smell, sound, sight).
Hello Mia!! I’m a little late on this one but glad you’re having fun in the Hamptons (I’ve never been but it somehow shows up in half of my stories as this dreamy destination — someday I will actually vacation there). Proud of all your writing work this summer and everything you’re doing — hope you’re giving yourself a much-needed break as well!
In terms of my own writing update, I’ve been struggling with motivation for fiction, so I’ve decided to write a thought a day without judgement (more of a personal narrative style). On my runs down my new favorite street, I will stop at the end, sit by the water, and get engrossed in explaining some facet of my life or observation I’ve been ruminating on. You’ve inspired me to do this and I’ve been really trying to write without judgement. We are so hard on ourselves as writers! The peace of just putting words on a page, for me, is steadily overcoming that self-criticism.
acotar!! lowkey a wild ride of a book series so i'm excited to hear what you think lmfao
